Powering jobs in the New Energy Economy: Meet Michael Sanchez

Michael Sanchez, 23, is a welder at Sun Action Trackers.

A Judson High School graduate, Sanchez started his career at Sun Action Trackers in January of this year.

The San Antonio native received two weeks of training as a welder and now helps CPS Energy’s New Energy Economy partner Sun Action Trackers and its team of 70 build and assemble dual axis trackers. The components work in solar arrays to allow solar cells to gather the maximum amount of light for conversion to solar energy by literally tracking the sun, tilting not only left and right, but up and down.

I answered an ad on Craigslist that was offering free welding training. I thought it was too good to be true. Two weeks later, I started at Ercam Trackers, then transitioned over to Sun Action Trackers when the company regrouped.

Besides the friends, the best part is that it has changed my life drastically — financially, as well as with what I want to do in the future. I can practice and perfect my welding skills. I’m learning a trade I can take anywhere and will stay with me for the rest of my life. It’s a good opportunity to provide for my family.

The most challenging part is that since we’re building hundreds of trackers a week, it can get a bit repetitive. But that also allows you to get it right.

I never thought I’d be in solar power, but I did always want to weld.

My favorite thing about welding is how many different things we can fabricate from simple scrap metal — from coffee tables to racks I can mount on my truck. And, of course, solar trackers.
